April 21,
2000 - I found this text on the net. It compares
regular UPT and ENJJPT. It was published on the net february 15th 2000,
but I think the text itself dates back to 1998. However I still think that
it was interesting...
BULLET BACKGROUND PAPER
- Program started in 1981 at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX - Wichita Falls located in north-central part of state, about 10 miles
from Oklahoma
- About 2 hours from both Dallas/Ft Worth and Oklahoma City - Avg high temp in summer is 95 degrees, winter avg high 57 degrees - Population about 100,000; most big-city features - mall, movie theater,
restaurants,
- ENJJPT created through MOU (memorandum of understanding) signed by Ministers of Defense (US Sec Def) of participating nations -Purpose is to train jet pilots for assignment to fighter/fighter type
aircraft of the armed
- Participating nations today include: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany,
Greece,
- All countries send instructors, most send students, although in varying numbers - US sends the most students followed by Germany - Program accomplished in three phases: pre-flight, primary flight training and advanced flight training - Phase one includes in-processing, physiological training and academics - Phase two includes flight training in the mighty T-37 Tweet and more academics - Phase three is flight training in the supersonic T-38 Talon and still more academics Several differences between USAF SUPT and ENJJPT SUPT; - SUPT has several tracks: primary flight training can be in either
USAF T-37 or USN
- Advanced SUPT track is varied: T-38s for bombers/fighters, T-lAs for
airlift/tankers,
- SUPT advanced track selection is merit assignment based on student
ranking at
- Those students (SUPT) desiring fighter assignments must compete for limited T-38 slots ENJJPT; -ENJJPT has no track selection, everyone flies the T-37 and T-38 - Follow-on assignments are based on merit (class ranking) - ENJJPT training similar to SUPT B/F but a few important differences - Syllabus has more flying hours: approx 260 vs approx 220 for SUPT - ENJJPT does not have latest technology sims with motion and visual;
use
- Even though flying time favors ENJJPT, any training advantages disappear quickly after UPT - ENJJPT grads have no assignment priority; assignments are same as for SUPT B/F track - Approx 85% fighter, 15% bomber - Most SUPT grads will quickly close any training gap during follow-on training - ENJJPT program still has advantages - Unique environment; international flavor due to influence of NATO countries - Opportunity to fly with instructors from several different nations
and weapon
- All graduates (with rare exception) get fighter or bomber assignment;
no track
Bottom Line: ENJJPT is probably the best bet for those pilot candidates who are 100% certain they want a fighter (or bomber) assignment, however, if someone is undecided about the type of aircraft they want to fly, he/she should consider attending regular SUPT. If they decide after flying T-37s they still want a fighter or bomber, they can compete for a slot in the B/F track. Lt Col Williamns / HQ AETC / DOFI / 487-6341 / 06 Feb 98
