December
22, 1999 - I have seen THE biggest burning
flying 'object' of the year - including any of the various afterburners
any of you guys use. Just two days ago when I flew back from Søndre
Strømfjord, Greenland to Vaerlose (Copenhagen), I saw this giant
'object' almost right next to me. I was in 41.000' doing .83M, just east
of Aalborg, at 20.16 at night, when suddenly a very bright and very present
huge 'thing' came shooting by on my right side. Descending and flying faster
than me - still far away enough that I couldn't feel the heat - I soon
realised that it couldn't be a fighter..... but what it was, I still didn't
know. I called it out for the rest of the crew and quickly made a wish,
for that case it would count as a shooting star. It would burn or light
for another 25 seconds - and that is a loooong time, before it would make
a crash landing next to OPA's base... Only because I had been without sunlight
for those 2 weeks in Greenland and my eyes had adapted for more than perfeckt
night vision, I managed to see the remains of the letters "T..AN" on the
'object'. So I could then inform the others that we had just seen an ex-TITAN-rocket
living its last seconds, opening the celebrations of the new millenium,
and marking this fantastic symbiosis of cooperation between USA and Europe,
examplified in launching a rocket in The States and later fly in formation
with this huge 'firecracker' before permanently parking the crap in the
soil of northern Germany!
